Freemode Events & Challenges
Automatic open-world contests without a matchmaking lobby. This guide separates eight active Event families from 17 active Challenges, identifies entries removed in TU 1.44, and keeps Business Battles and Time Trials separate.
FREEMODE / EVENTS / CHALLENGESComplete activity guide
The current permanent index contains 8 Events and 17 Challenges. Moving Target, Dead Drop, Kill List Competitive, Driveby Challenge and Melee Challenge were removed in TU 1.44—they are neither active nor rotational. Activation is random in an eligible session rather than launched from a Jobs list; Hunt the Beast requires at least ten players.

Freemode Events & Challenges
Enter Freemode and remain outside Jobs, interiors and Passive Mode. When the session meets its gate, a purple top-left notification shows the name, rule and countdown; follow it without entering a matchmaking lobby.
After the tutorial on all supported platforms. Most require at least four available session players; Hunt the Beast requires at least ten. A private session works only when the specific participant threshold is met.
Use Interaction Menu → Map Blip Options / Hide Options → Events to enable notifications. Leave interiors/Jobs, disable Passive Mode and wait for the next activation; if available players drop below the minimum, the event may not launch or may cancel.

01 • First completion, step by step
First completion, step by step
01 Prepare an eligible session
- ACTION
- Remain outdoors in Freemode, refill armour and choose a versatile vehicle. Confirm Events are not hidden and enough available players are present.
- TIP
- A private session does not bypass the minimum; invite friends before waiting.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- An interior, active Job, Passive Mode or undersized session can exclude you from activation.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Return outside, disable Passive Mode and wait for the next rotation; do not search for it in Rockstar Jobs.
02 Read the purple notice
- ACTION
- Identify whether it is an Event with a role/cargo/zone or a Challenge measuring one score. Check the required tool, area and time before the countdown.
- TIP
- A Challenge scores exactly the named metric—for example distance, not airtime.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- Using the wrong vehicle class or killing invalid targets does not score.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Change vehicle before the start if the notice permits; after launch verify that your personal score increases.
03 Enter the activity
- ACTION
- For an Event reach the zone/vehicle or perform its join action; for a Challenge begin a qualifying attempt after the timer starts. No lobby screen is required.
- TIP
- In Hunt the Beast the Beast role is random; hunters use periodic pings while the Beast visits ten landmarks.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- Arriving late or failing to perform a qualifying action can leave you only watching the scoreboard.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Focus on the next score/active icon; if participation did not register, wait for the next event rather than destroying objectives outside it.
04 Play the scoring rule, not the chaos
- ACTION
- In possession/zone events maximise control time; in checkpoints take the nearest safe gate; in Challenges repeat short attempts that match the metric.
- TIP
- Rivals are obstacles, but a kill alone does not score in Hot Property, Hold the Wheel or King of the Castle.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- Leaving the session as a critical player—such as the Beast or objective holder—can end the Event and incur Bad Sport.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- If a rival takes the objective, follow the active icon and choose an interception point; after death return to the scoring action.
05 Carry the score to the end
- ACTION
- In the final phase do not change vehicle/role unnecessarily. Wait for the final table, placement and cash/RP before returning to ordinary Freemode.
- TIP
- A secured top-three score is often better than a flashy final attempt that can break a chain without time to recover.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- Leaving before settlement or dropping below the player threshold can cancel the result.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Remain until the result message; after cancellation check active-player count and Hide Options before the next rotation.
06 Separate baseline from weekly bonus
- ACTION
- Record only the name, placement and baseline result message. Temporary multipliers belong to the separate event layer and do not change this guide's mechanics.
- TIP
- Do not assume a currently bonused activity will be the next session rotation.
- RISK / FAILURE CONDITION
- Turning a temporary result into sustainable hourly income creates false economics for random activation.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Keep the family informational and use the separate Business Battles guide when the notice concerns cargo.
02 • Variants and mechanics
Variants and mechanics
Events: control and possession
Usually 4+ available playersAutomatic session notice.
- OBJECTIVE
- Active index: Hold the Wheel—hold the marked vehicle; Hot Property—hold the briefcase; King of the Castle—control the zone.
- MECHANIC
- Score comes from possession or zone-control time, not kill count. A critical player should not leave the session.
- COMPLETION
- Final leaderboard when time expires.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- After losing the objective intercept its route rather than chasing from behind; after losing the zone return through another approach.
Events: route, targets and destruction
Usually 4+Automatic notice; the relevant vehicle may be supplied or specified.
- OBJECTIVE
- Index: Air Checkpoints; Checkpoints; Criminal Damage; Kill List. The first two score gates, Criminal Damage scores destruction value, and Kill List scores Merryweather kills in a supplied weaponized vehicle.
- MECHANIC
- For checkpoints plan a loop without backtracking; in Criminal Damage chain vehicle clusters; in Kill List preserve the supplied tool.
- COMPLETION
- Highest valid score at the end.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- If score does not rise, return to the required class/vehicle and active targets; ordinary damage outside the event may not count.
Hunt the Beast
Minimum 10 players in sessionAutomatic activation; the Beast role is random.
- OBJECTIVE
- The Beast visits ten landmarks while hidden between pings; other players track and eliminate the Beast.
- MECHANIC
- The Beast changes direction after pings and avoids straight roads; hunters split the map instead of moving as one convoy.
- COMPLETION
- The Beast visits all landmarks or hunters score the elimination before time expires.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- A stuck Beast targets the nearest unvisited landmark; after a false ping hunters return to a road net rather than the old dot.
17 active Challenges — combat and ground
Usually 4+Automatic Challenge and suitable weapon/vehicle.
- OBJECTIVE
- Active combat index: Headshot Kills, Sniper Kills. Active ground index: Highest Speed, Longest Bail, Longest Jump, Longest Stoppie, Longest Wheelie, Near Misses, No Crashes, Reverse Driving, Vehicles Stolen.
- MECHANIC
- Each measures one metric. Use straight roads/ramps and short repeatable attempts; combat Challenges count other players, not NPCs.
- COMPLETION
- Highest qualifying score when the timer ends.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- If progress does not react, change target type or vehicle class; after a crash start a new chain rather than continuing an invalid run.
17 active Challenges — air and falling
Usually 4+Aircraft/helicopter or parachute depending on the name.
- OBJECTIVE
- Active index: Fly Under Bridges; Inverted Flying; Longest Fall Survived; Longest Freefall; Low Flying; Lowest Parachute.
- MECHANIC
- Check whether the metric is distance, height or bridge count. Preserve room to level out or land safely.
- COMPLETION
- A valid score is registered before the timer ends.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- After opening the parachute too early make a new attempt; after losing an aircraft use a quickly available qualifying type.
Removed in TU 1.44 — inactive
No active eligibilityHistorical information only; do not look for them in the rotation.
- OBJECTIVE
- Moving Target, Dead Drop, Kill List Competitive, Driveby Challenge and Melee Challenge were removed from the active system.
- MECHANIC
- They are neither active nor rotational; their old descriptions do not form a current launch path.
- COMPLETION
- No current completion—historical section.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- If an old guide lists them, return to the 8 Events / 17 Challenges index and wait for an eligible session notice.
Business Battles — separate Event
Minimum 3 session players according to maintained secondary sourcesAutomatic Business Battle notice.
- OBJECTIVE
- Recover cargo and deliver it to a Nightclub Warehouse or the alternative drop-off without a Nightclub.
- MECHANIC
- It has its own location index, cargo limits and guide; it is not one of the 19 simple Challenges.
- COMPLETION
- Each delivered piece settles goods/cash/RP according to the objective.
- HOW TO RECOVER THE RUN
- Open the full Business Battles guide; after a takeover follow the cargo's current holder.
03 • Real roles / Strategies
Real roles i Strategies
Scoring participant
Performs the exact Challenge metric or controls the Event objective/zone, ignoring actions that do not change the board.
Critical player
The Beast, briefcase/vehicle holder or other critical participant preserves Event continuity and does not leave session.
Hunter/interceptor
Reads the map, predicts the objective route and closes it down; shooting without taking the objective does not score.
Enable notifications, prepare a fast car and start with a clearly measured Challenge or Checkpoints. First verify that your personal score rises.
Keep a motorcycle, fast car and aircraft easy to request. In control Events intercept before a turn; in Challenges run short attempts with fast resets.
04 • Reward and economic status
Score/placement → cash/RP • outside rankings
An Event settles placement or objective completion, while a Challenge scores the specific on-screen metric. Random session activation and different scoring rules cannot be honestly collapsed into one rate or sustainable hourly income.
Observed range specific to this activity; variant, result, duration or completion condition selects the value within it. Event multipliers are excluded.
B • community-reportedThe formula and roles apply to the stated settlement unit; event multipliers are excluded.
B • community-reportedActivation is random in an eligible session; there is no manual restart, guaranteed cycle or sustainable hourly rate.

Actions do not score
Read the metric and use the correct target/vehicle; NPCs do not count for combat Player Challenges.
Removed entry treated as rotational
Moving Target, Dead Drop, Kill List Competitive, Driveby and Melee were removed in TU 1.44; do not wait for them in rotation.
